Oscars 2021: all the winners

oscar - winners

The 93rd edition of the Oscars 2021 was held tonight. This year, the ceremony was “historic” in its own way, with unexpected victories and favorite candidates left empty-handed. One of the winners did not even know that he had won one of the coveted statuettes. He found out this morning as soon as he woke up.

Nomadland does not disappoint expectations

The Oscars 2021 wrote another piece of cinema history. The award for best picture went to Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland. The director also won the Best Director award, making her the first Asian and second woman to win this statuette.

David Fincher’s Mank, despite its 10 nominations, has only won two awards, one for Best Cinematography and one for Best Production Design. Aaron Sorkin’s film, The Chicago 7 Trial, remains empty-handed.

Oscars 2021: a veteran edition

The four acting awards literally left us speechless. Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Veterans Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Anthony Hopkins (The Father) instead conquered the statuettes for Best Actress and Best Actor, demolishing all the predictions made.

Anthony Hopkins therefore wins a second statuette for best actor after 29 years, confirming himself as the oldest actor to have won one. However, the actor was not present during the ceremony. Hopkins had absolutely no expectation of receiving the award and was sleeping peacefully at his home in Wales during the proclamation. As soon as he woke up and found out he was the Oscar winner, he immediately posted a video on social media to thank the Academy and pay homage to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Thomas Vinterberg’s emotional speech

Director Thomas Vinterberg won the Best Foreign Film Award with his Another Round. The director took the stage and dedicated the victory to his daughter, who tragically died recently at the age of 19 in a car accident.

Soul: two well-deserved Oscars

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste are the winners of the Best Score Award for Soul, which also wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. A soundtrack and a movie that have fully entered the history of cinema (here our review).
