The nominations favored Belfast and West Side Story, but The Power of the Dog came out on top. The film distributed by Netflix, directed by Jane Campion and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst won four statuettes, including best picture and best director. Immediately after Belfast and Dune with three awards and West Side Story with two.

Will Smith and Jessica Chastain grab the Best Actor and Best Actress awards for their performances in King Richard and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Smith took the stage and dedicated the victory to Venus and Serena Williams.

“I am here tonight with Venus and Serena and their sister Isha,” said Smith in his acceptance speech. “And I really just want to say to all of you, thank you for entrusting me with your story. What you were able to do, and what your family was able to do, inspired everyone in this room, everyone in this country and everyone around the world. You all define the American dream. You represent the best of what we all hope this world and this country can be”.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines, produced by Sony, takes home the award for best animated feature film. Disney, which competed with 3 out of 5 films (Encanto, Luca and Raya and the last dragon) was left empty-handed. The rematch will take place on the night of the Oscars. Will Disney be able to make up for it?

Critics Choice Awards 2022: Ted Lasso triumphs again

On the TV front, Ted Lasso once again triumphs at the Critics Choice Awards 2022. Apple TV+ comedy series swept the competition away for the second consecutive year, earning four awards: Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy for Jason Sudeikis, Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham.

The actress took advantage of her presence on stage to remember the crisis in Ukraine. “Thank you so much. But it would be remiss of us to not throw the focus to the most important thing that is happening in the world at the moment, our beautiful brothers and sisters, and for me more importantly, the babies in the Ukraine, that are being utterly decimated at the moment from this putrid, putrid torrent of abuse,” Waddingham shared. “Please think of them is much as you can and give as much as you can. We are so grateful for this. But may this stop. Made this stop. Please.”
